TEAMNEWS: Tigers boss impressed by triallists

The first Telford Tigers open trials saw more than 35 players try out for a place in the English Premier League team this weekend - exceeding all expectations.

Coach Tom Watkins said: "I have to say thanks to all the players who made an effort to come to Telford for the trials. The number of guys who asked to be included was way over my expectations, and it just goes to show the commitment they will show looking for a team. I want them to know that their commitment did not go unnoticed."

Watkins set up the sessions - which took place on Saturday and Sunday at Telford Ice Rink - to get a look at the talent available as he aims to complete his team's roster ahead of the new season in September.

And the turnout has given player-coach Tom Watkins plenty to think about as he completes his side's line-up, with players coming from as far afield as Sweden, as well as several familiar Telford faces.

He added: "Although I have the basis of my squad, there were a few slots still to be filled, and I felt it was unfair to reject potential players just by looking at their CVs.

"I thought it was important to see who was available. What matters is finding the best squad to improve our team."

Watkins is so far remaining tight-lipped about whether any of the triallists have made his final cut, but said more announcements would be made very soon.
