Fans of Telford Tigers - who this week raised more than £20,000 to save their team - will get their first chance to cheer on the Shropshire side at Telford Ice Rink on Sunday 14 September.

Having battled back from the brink of extinction, Telford are keen to take on Milton Keynes in a brace of pre-season challenges, with Tigers travelling to the Lightning on Saturday 13 September.

Tigers were left shell-shocked last week after Cannock-based company Eurologix pulled the plug on a major sponsorship deal. However, a number of local businesses joined fundraising fans so the Shropshire side could take to the ice next month - albeit running on a hugely reduced budget to that planned earlier in the summer.

telford shopping centreTelford Shopping Centre has joined the growing list of 'Shropshire Saviours' - companies who are sponsoring Telford Tigers to ensure the ice hockey team can compete in the English Premier League - and the centre's top boss has pledged to be rinkside cheering the team on in their first home game of the season.

Tigers were hit by a massive cash shortfall when Cannock-based company Eurologix pulled out of a sponsorship deal with just weeks to the start of the league campaign.

But a surge of support from local businesses, as well as fundraising efforts by ice hockey fans, has ensured the team has the finances in place to start the season, with their first home game on Sunday 14 September.

Telford Shopping Centre director Chris Jones said: "We passionately believe in supporting the local community and, when we heard of the Tigers' plight, we felt compelled to step in and help.

"We are neighbours, and neighbours should be there for one another in times of need.

Telford Tigers ice hockey club has confirmed it will be competing in the English Premier League season starting next month after fans and local businesses rallied to raise more than £20,000 in just four days.

The team was left with a seemingly impossible mission when a planned sponsorship deal fell through, meaning the management were unwilling to commit to the league without financial security.

However, a massive fundraising campaign from supporters and the recruitment of several new sponsors saw the Shropshire side saved - although team bosses now have the tough job of re-negotiating contracts to assemble a squad of players in time for the first matches in September.

Coach Claude Dumas said; "We really didn't think it was possible to get the funds together in such a short time. It just shows that people do care and realise that the Telford Tigers are important to Shropshire.

"I want to thank everyone who has helped us get to this point - the fans and sponsors and all those behind the scenes who have put in time, money and effort to save this team."
