MATCHREPORT: Tigers Topple Leaders But Watkins Still Realistic

With the two teams locked into a 1-1 scoreline after 65 minutes on Sunday night, it was left to Telford netminder Declan Ryan to save the third Manchester penalty and give Telford their first win over the Phoenix in four attempts.

The result followed a 3-0 defeat at Milton Keynes Lightning on Saturday evening, albeit with a vastly improved performance compared to the previous few weeks.

But Watkins doesn't want to get carried away by a single victory over one of the English Premier League's leading sides. He said: "We didn't get what we deserved on Saturday night, but tonight we played their game and got the two points.

"Everybody is very excited, and I don't want to take the gloss off it, but it's just one win. Peterborough beat Guildford tonight, so we need to make sure we do the same and win our home games. With solid performances, we should be able to do that."

A telling statistic from Sunday's game shows that with Telford having 31 shots on the Manchester goal, their only breakthrough came from Joe Henry in the first period.

At the other end of the ice, Tigers netminder Declan Ryan faced 50 shots - and fully deserved the man of the match award.

Watkins added: "The biggest member of a team is always the goaltender and if he is hot, you have a chance to win.

"There are guys in there who can score goals, and we need them to start scoring on a regular basis."

Manchester Phoenix player-coach Tony Hand, meanwhile, was left disappointed by his side's lack of a killer edge in front of goal. He said: "I thought we had enough chances to win the game, but we didn't bury the chances as much as I would like to see.

"We battled well but with penalty shots it can go either way. In overtime we had a couple of chances to win it. We fought hard, but I would have like to see us score more."

Sunday's win leaves Telford in joint-eighth place in the EPL standings, with Basingstoke and MIlton Keynes the opposition next weekend.
