Fans Sign Up For Tigers Trust
More than 60 fans were among the very first to sign up as members of the Tiger Tracks supporters' trust - the group aiming to get Telford Tigers back into the English Premier League - with many more taking membership forms away from the meeting for family and friends. The trust's official launch at Telford Ice Rink saw fans, former players and previous sponsors gathering to celebrate the UK's first ice hockey supporters' trust and to meet the group who have been working with Supporters Direct to initiate a co-operative to own and manage the team.
The working group also introduced the trust's first chairman, former ice hockey star Alan Gould, who played for Tigers from 1985-1992 and was a member of the British Division 1 Championship squad of 1988. Gould scored Tigers' very first goal in their opening game against Altrincham Aces.
Gould, originally from Whitley Bay, said: "I am really honoured to be able to serve Tigers in this way and look forward to the work we have ahead to raise funds, build a team and get the Tigers back on the ice."
Also at the event was prospective parliamentary candidate Paul Kalinauckas who, as chairman of Co-operatives West Midlands, addressed the meeting about the value to the community of people working together. Mr Kalinauckas was among the first to return his membership form to the committee treasurer.Annual membership of Tiger Tracks costs £10 for adults, with a £7.50 concessionary rate for OAPs. Current legislation does not allow under-16s to be voting members of a trust, but this is expected to change later this year. In the meantime, children can join "Roary's Club" for just £5 so they are still able to support the club and join in any trust events.
There is also a family membership, for two adults and up to two children, offered at just £25.
Supporters were urged to volunteer to help with fundraising, marketing and administration of the club, as well as joining up as members.
