Fans Trust Meeting Date
Supporters keen to see the Telford Tigers Premier League ice hockey team resurrected are invited to attend an open meeting next month, to find out how to establish a fans’ trust to run the club.
The meeting, on Tuesday 3 November (7.30pm) at Telford Ice Rink, will include a presentation by a representative of Supporters Direct, the organisation that provides advice and guidance to more than 150 supporters’ trusts, including ShrewsTRUST and AFC Telford United.
The event has been organised by club volunteer Mike Dixon and the team’s equipment manager Andy Phillips, whose longstanding devotion to the club was recognised last year with one of the Shropshire Star’s ‘Telford Champion’ awards.
The Telford Tigers were mothballed at the end of last season following the decision by owners David and Rachel Candlin to step down and attempts to secure new management failing. Dixon and Phillips have spent the summer researching supporters’ trusts and attending meetings with key bodies and interested parties to establish whether a club run by a committee of fans was achievable and viable.
Dixon said: "We believe a fans’ trust is our best hope of getting the Tigers EPL team back onto the ice in 2010. There has always been a loyal fanbase behind the Tigers, and it would be fabulous to see the team owned and managed by its own followers.
"Supporters Direct already successfully aids hundreds of football and rugby teams and, providing there is sufficient enthusiasm from the Shropshire hockey community, they are keen to see their model rolled out to our sport."
Everyone attending the meeting will have an opportunity to ask questions about how a trust would operate, and to collectively decide on the future of the club.
Phillips added: "It is vital that everyone with an interest in the Telford Tigers comes along to the meeting and takes their chance to have a say in what happens next for the team."
