COMMUNITY: Tigers Rally Fans For Prize Donations

Tigers call on fans for prize donationsTelford Tigers are calling on the help of their fans, in the hunt for prizes and other items to support ongoing community activity.

While the Tigers head coach is busy talking to players and assembling his new team, trust members and volunteers are working tirelessly to increase the profile of the organisation by attending car boot sales and community events throughout the area.

But after many months of hard work Tombola prizes and car boot stocks are running very low, and the trust are on the hunt for donations and unwanted items to ensure this valuable work can continue.

Claire Shaw, who organises these events commented "We have attended many car boot sales, fetes, carnivals and community events since the trust was formed and they offer a fantastic opportunity to get the Tigers in to places where we normally don't go"

"Over the course of the season we were approached by many people asking who we were, but we noticed after a few months people recognised us as the Telford Tigers"

COMMUNITY: Watkins Issues Heart-Felt Appeal

Tom & Sam Watkins, with members of the Telford Venom junior development teamsTelford Tigers player-coach Tom Watkins is appealing for people to sponsor him as he takes on a charity Skateathon challenge very close to his heart.

Watkins is aiming to skate 10 miles in 90 minutes in aid of the Birmingham Children’s Hospital – where his son Sam receives regular check-ups after being born with a heart defect.

The skateathon takes place on July 24 at the Birmingham Leisurebox ice rink, and Watkins will be joined by fellow Telford Tigers, several members of the Telford Venom junior ice hockey team and supporters of the two clubs.

Young Sam, now aged seven and a Venom under-10 player himself, will also join dad Tom on the ice for the challenge – a testament to the medical care he has received since birth.

Watkins said: “My wife Clare and I spent a lot of time at the Children’s Hospital in the first few years of Sam’s life for numerous surgeries, and we still attend regularly.

“As soon as I heard about the Skateathon I wanted to take part and I have been touched by the number of people connected to the Tigers and Venom who wanted to come and support me. We will be skating in our Tigers and Venom shirts, so will be easy to spot.”

The event organisers are hoping to see 1,000 skaters completing their 10-mile challenges throughout the day, with a charity target of £25,000.

COMMUNITY: Tigers Bowled Over By Cricket Fun Day Success

All the participants of the Telford Tigers Cricket fun day 2011

Telford Tigers held their first summer fundraising event at Wellington Cricket Club, with a six-a-side cricket tournament.

The event gave a chance for the some of the junior teams, supporters, trust members and senior players to get together, whilst raising much needed income. The event was well supported with around 150 people attending throughout the afternoon.

The venue couldn’t have been picked better and the weather turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far with the mercury rising to a balmy 28degrees.

Six teams signed up, limited due to time and space, but many more indicated an interest for next time. There was a successful tombola running, bouncy castle, bar and barbecue, and a guest appearance by Roary the Tiger.

Tigers coach Tom Watkins assembled a team of club stars and accordingly was heard coaching them in the art of cricket: “You have got a bat, hit the ball as hard as possible and run!”
